5 Common Google Ads Mistakes Service Businesses Make

Google Ads is the fastest way to get new leads for a service business. It puts your phone number right in front of people who need help now.

But it is also the fastest way to lose money.

We see it all the time. A business owner tries to run ads themselves. Or they hire a general marketing agency that does not understand their industry.

The result is always the same. They get clicks. They spend the budget. But the phone does not ring.

The problem is usually the setup, not the platform.

We audit a lot of accounts. We see the same five errors over and over again.
These mistakes drain your budget on bad traffic and send your potential customers to competitors.

Here are the five biggest money leaks we see and how you can fix them.

Mistake 1: Using broad match keywords

Google Ads match Types

When you add a keyword in Google Ads, the default setting is "Broad Match." This is dangerous for service businesses.

Broad Match gives Google permission to show your ad for anything they think is related to your keyword. They focus on volume, not intent.

The problem

You end up paying for traffic that has zero chance of converting.

The real-world example

Imagine you run a commercial plumbing company. You bid on the keyword commercial plumbing.

If you leave it on Broad Match, Google might show your ad to people searching for:

  • "How to fix a leaky sink at home"

  • "Plumbing jobs near me"

  • "Cheap drain snake at Home Depot"

The fix

Change your keywords to "Phrase Match" or "Exact Match."

  • Phrase Match: Your ad only shows if the search includes your specific phrase (e.g., "commercial plumbing")

  • Exact Match: Your ad only shows for that exact term or a very close variant

This limits your total traffic, but the clicks you get will be actual potential customers.

Mistake 2: Sending all clicks to the home page

This is one of the quickest ways to waste money on Google Ads. You paid for a high-intent click, but you are not capitalizing on it.

The problem

The home page is built to inform, not to sell. It talks about your company, links to your blog, and features several services. It has too many distractions.

When a customer searches 24-hour emergency electrician and clicks your ad, they are ready to buy. If they land on your home page, they have to waste time searching for the right service link.

The cost

Every extra click or second of searching increases the chance the user will hit the back button and call your competitor instead. You pay for the click, but the lead is lost.

The fix

Use specific, dedicated landing pages.

  • The page must match the ad headline and the exact service the user searched for

  • The page must have one clear call to action: "Call Now" or a simple quote form

  • Remove extra navigation links and distractions that could pull the user away

A highly specific landing page converts visitors into leads much faster than a generic home page.

Mistake 3: Failing to use negative keywords

Google ads negative keywords

Most business owners focus on the keywords they want to target. They forget to tell Google which keywords they want to avoid.

The problem

If you do not block bad keywords, Google will show your ads to people who have no intention of hiring you. These are "junk clicks."

The real-world example

Let’s say you are a roofing contractor. You bid on "roof repair."

Without negative keywords, you will likely pay for clicks on searches like:

  • "Roof repair jobs"

  • "How to do a DIY roof repair"

  • "Free roof repair for seniors"

The cost

We often see accounts wasting 20% to 30% of their monthly budget on these types of clicks. That is money that should have gone toward actual leads.

The fix

You must build a negative keyword list. Go through your "Search Terms" report and block words that do not lead to sales.

Start by adding these common negative keywords immediately:

  • free

  • cheap

  • jobs

  • salary

  • training

  • DIY

  • association

Mistake 4: Not tracking phone calls

Google ads tracking phone calls as conversions

Service businesses run on phone calls. Yet, we see many Google Ads accounts that only track "form fills" because it is easier to set up.

The problem

If you are only tracking forms, you are missing half the picture.

A customer with a burst pipe or a broken AC unit is not going to fill out a contact form and wait 24 hours for an email. They are going to call you immediately.

The cost

If you don't track calls, you are flying blind.

You might look at your dashboard and see a keyword that has spent $100 with zero form fills. You might pause it, thinking it is a waste of money. In reality, that keyword might have driven five phone calls directly to your dispatcher.

You end up turning off your best-performing ads because the data is incomplete.

The fix

You must set up conversion tracking for phone calls.

At a minimum, use Google’s free "Call Extension" and "Call Only" ad tracking. For even better data, use a third-party call tracking tool or dynamic number insertion on your website.

You need to know exactly which keyword made the phone ring so you can spend more money on it.

Mistake 5: The "set it and forget it" mentality

Google Ads is not a billboard. You cannot just put it up and leave it there for six months. It is a live auction that changes every single minute.

The problem

Competitors enter the market. Bid prices fluctuate. Search trends shift.

If you launch a campaign and never look at it again, your performance will degrade over time. What worked in January might be completely ineffective by June.

The cost

An unmanaged account slowly bleeds efficiency. Your "Cost Per Lead" will creep up, and your position on the page will slide down. You end up paying more for the same results.

The fix

Active management is required.

You or your agency should be logging in weekly to:

  • Review the "Search Terms" report for new negative keywords

  • Adjust bids on high-performing keywords

  • Test new ad copy to improve click-through rates

  • Check that your budget is being spent on the right services

Stop wasting budget and start getting leads

These mistakes are easy to make, but they are expensive to keep.

If you fix your keyword match types, improve your landing pages, and start tracking phone calls, you will see an immediate difference in your ROI. You stop paying for clicks and start paying for customers.
