Google's New AI Search Mode Is Changing Everything
What This Means for Your business online

The Big Shift in Google Search
Google is making one of its biggest changes to search in years, and it’s getting a lot of attention.
With the rollout of AI Overviews and a new feature called AI Mode, search results are starting to look and function differently.
Instead of showing a list of links, Google is now generating full answers directly on the results page. In many cases, users don’t need to visit a website at all.
This is a major shift. It affects how visible your business is, how traffic reaches your site, and how people make decisions after searching.
Here’s what’s changing:
- Fewer clicks to websites, especially for informational queries
- More answers being generated by Google's AI, not your content
- Less control over where users go next after searching
These updates are rolling out now, and the direction is clear. This is the time to understand what’s happening, and what you can do to stay visible as search evolves.

What Is Google AI Mode and AI Overviews?
Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode are not just new features, they represent a shift in how search works at its core. These tools are powered by Google’s Gemini model, specifically Gemini 2.5, which is designed to deliver more helpful, conversational answers directly in the search results.
AI Overviews: Summarized Answers at the Top of Search
AI Overviews are already rolling out in standard search. When a user asks a question, Google now pulls information from multiple sources and creates a summary, displaying it above the traditional list of search results.
Instead of clicking on a link, users may get everything they need from that summary—reducing the need to visit websites.
This is especially common for:
- Informational or how-to queries
- Product research questions
- Local service comparisons
Even if your content helps generate that answer, your website might not get credit or a click.
AI Mode: A Fully Conversational Search Experience
AI Mode takes it further. This feature, currently in beta in the U.S., turns the search engine into a live assistant. It allows for follow-up questions, deeper exploration, and a back-and-forth conversation—without ever leaving the Google interface.
Here’s what AI Mode allows users to do:
- Ask a question and get a full summary
- Follow up with more specific questions
- Upload images or use voice to search
- Stay entirely within Google while browsing answers
This is powered by the same kind of large language model technology used by ChatGPT, but it’s fully integrated into search.
Gemini 2.5: The Engine Behind the Experience
Google’s Gemini 2.5 model is what powers both AI Overviews and AI Mode. It handles the processing, summarization, and logic behind generating answers, making Google behave less like a search engine and more like a virtual assistant.
This model is capable of:
- Breaking complex queries into sub-questions
- Gathering and summarizing insights from across the web
- Using voice, text, and image prompts together
The goal, according to Google, is to create a faster, more helpful, and more intuitive search experience—especially on mobile devices where traditional browsing can be clunky.

The Impact on Website Traffic, SEO, and Visibility
As Google shifts from being a search engine to more of an answer engine, the way people interact with search results is changing—fast. These changes directly affect how often users click on websites, how traffic is measured, and how businesses show up in the results.
Fewer Clicks, More Answers in Search
With AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google gives users detailed answers on the search results page without requiring them to click through to a website. This trend is part of a larger shift toward what’s known as zero-click searches—searches where the user finds what they need without leaving Google.
Here’s how that impacts businesses:
- Users may see your content, but never visit your website
- Traditional organic traffic will decline for many informational keywords
- Featured snippets and AI Overviews compete for attention, leaving less room for regular rankings
This doesn’t mean search is dying. It means the definition of visibility is changing. You could still appear in results and influence a customer’s decision, even if they never land on your homepage.
Click Quality Over Click Volume
While total traffic might decrease, the clicks you do get could be more valuable. Studies and real-world testing have shown that users who click through from AI summaries or featured answers tend to:
- Spend more time on the site
- Visit more pages
- Convert at higher rates
That’s because they’re better informed and closer to taking action. Instead of chasing every click, businesses now need to focus on attracting the right ones.
Tracking Is Getting Less Clear
One of the biggest challenges is visibility into where traffic comes from. Currently, when someone visits your site from an AI Overview or AI Mode, it may appear in Google Analytics as direct traffic because Google isn’t passing referrer information.
What this means for your tracking:
- You may see a spike in “direct” visits to deep pages with long URLs
- That traffic likely came from an AI result, not someone typing your URL
- Attribution is harder, so time-on-site and engagement become more important to monitor
Google has not confirmed when, or if, this tracking issue will be resolved. For now, marketers and business owners need to pay closer attention to patterns in behavior, not just source tags.

What I Think About All This
If you’ve worked with me or followed the advice I give, you know my focus is always on helping businesses get real results—calls, leads, bookings, and steady growth.
That’s exactly how I see this change. Not as something to panic over, but something we need to adjust to.
Google’s new AI tools are changing how people search. They’re pulling answers from across the web, summarizing information instantly, and giving users what they need without having to click.
The old strategy of ranking a blog post and waiting for traffic? That’s fading. It’s not that SEO is dead—it’s that SEO is evolving into something bigger. I’d call it Search Everywhere Optimization now.
The Goal Isn’t Just Rankings—It’s Being Seen Everywhere
Search still matters, but the way people discover your business has changed. You need to show up:
- Inside Google’s AI-generated answers
- In your Google Business Profile
- In local maps
- In paid search ads
- Across platforms where your expertise and services are being referenced
That’s what Search Everywhere Optimization means: being present wherever people are searching, not just relying on a single spot in the rankings.
Your Website Is Still the Foundation of Your Online Presence
Let me be clear—your website still matters. A lot.
In fact, it matters more now. It’s the one place you fully control. It’s where people go to check if you're legit, see what you offer, and decide whether to take the next step.
People might find you first through an AI-generated answer, a Google ad, or a map listing, but your website is still where trust is built, and more importantly, where conversions happen.
That’s where someone reaches out, books a call, asks for a quote, or becomes a customer.
So if anything, your website needs to work harder now than it did before. It should be clear, focused, and support everything else you’re doing to get found.

Use Your Website to Get Conversions, Not Just a Brochure
Your website should be doing more than acting like an online brochure—it should be helping people make decisions. Whether someone finds you through an AI Overview, a map listing, or a Google Ad, chances are they’re still going to visit your website before taking the next step.
That’s where trust is confirmed, questions are answered, and action happens.
Your site needs to guide people through a clear path—from the moment they land to the moment they book, call, or request a quote.
Here’s what that looks like in practice:
- Put your most important services and offers at the top
- Lead with clear, helpful messaging, and let the content build naturally toward action
- Add strong calls-to-action throughout the page—not just at the bottom
- Include SEO content that adds value, not clutter
- Use structured data so Google knows exactly what the page is about (in the <head> for general info, or the body for things like services, products, or FAQs)
Think of your website as a walkthrough, not a wall of content. It should help someone quickly see what you do, why it matters, and how to take the next step.

Tracking What’s Actually Working
With all the changes happening in search, tracking where your leads are coming from is getting harder—but it’s still possible. You just have to know what to look for.
AI Overviews and AI Mode don’t always send traffic in the usual way. In many cases, clicks from these sources show up in your analytics as direct traffic instead of being labeled as search.
That’s because Google isn’t currently passing referrer data when someone clicks from an AI-generated summary.
So while it may look like someone typed in your URL directly, it’s more likely they found you through one of these new AI-powered search results. It’s not ideal, and we’re hoping Google updates this to show AI or organic traffic more clearly in analytics tools like GA4.
Watch for Spikes in Direct Traffic to Internal Pages
One thing to keep an eye on is direct traffic going to deep URLs—like a specific service page or blog post with a long URL that nobody would type manually.
If you see that happening more often, it’s a strong signal your content may be showing up in AI answers, even if it isn’t labeled as such.
Look for signs like:
- An increase in direct traffic to long-form or inner pages
- Higher-than-normal engagement on those pages
- Entry points that don’t make sense for someone typing the URL manually
These are clues that AI may be driving more visibility behind the scenes.
Attribution Isn’t Perfect, but Trends Still Matter
Google Analytics won’t always tell you exactly where a lead came from, especially when it comes to AI search. Tracking has always had blind spots, but AI has introduced more of them. Still, if you watch your trends over time, you can see what’s working.
- Are more users visiting your key pages and converting?
- Are branded searches increasing (more people Googling your business by name)?
- Are service inquiries or phone calls going up even if traffic looks flat?
We’re hoping Google improves this over time and gives marketers better visibility into what traffic is coming from AI results. Until then, tracking patterns and results is the best way to see what’s making an impact.

Don’t Panic, Plan
Google’s new AI-powered search experience is a big change, but it’s not the end of being found online. It just means the way people search, evaluate, and choose businesses is evolving.
And like every shift in digital marketing, the businesses that adapt will stay ahead.
Yes, you may see fewer clicks from traditional SEO. Yes, the data might look different or harder to track. But your business still has every opportunity to get found, earn trust, and turn interest into real leads and customers.
What matters now is how you respond.
- Make your website easier to understand—for both people and search engines
- Be intentional about what shows up at the top of the page
- Create content that speaks to what your customer is actually searching for
- Stay visible with the help of a smart Google Ads strategy
- Look at the bigger picture when reviewing traffic and conversions
The way people search is changing, but the goal is the same: being there when someone needs what you offer.
If you're serious about staying visible in this new search landscape, running Google Ads isn’t just a good idea, it’s one of the smartest moves you can make right now.
I offer two simple options:
- Performance Campaigns – Best for higher budgets focused on generating leads, calls, bookings, or quote requests.
- Brand Visibility Campaigns – Great for lower budgets focused on staying visible, building awareness, and gathering search insights.
