The Google Ads Do's and Don'ts Every Fishing Charter Needs to Know
Most charter owners who try Google Ads on their own end up wasting money and walking away thinking it doesn't work. I've managed Google Ads for fishing charters across the country and I can tell you it works. There are just a lot of settings to get right, and if you haven't done it before, it's easy to miss the ones that matter most.
The Numbers Don't Lie
96% of consumers use the internet to find local services. And when it comes to researching and evaluating local businesses, 81% of consumers turn to Google first. That's not social media. That's not word of mouth. That's Google, and it's where your next booking is starting right now.
The Do's
These are the things that make Google Ads actually work for a fishing charter. Get these right and you've got a real system for bringing in bookings. Skip them and you're just spending money hoping for the best.
1. Use Specific, Long-Tail Keywords
Don't just bid on "fishing trips." Nobody who types that is necessarily ready to book anything. You want phrases like "deep sea fishing charter [city]" or "inshore fishing guide [state]." Those are people who know what they want and are looking for someone to book with right now.
2. Add Negative Keywords
This is the one most charter owners skip entirely. Negative keywords tell Google what searches you don't want to show up for. If you only run saltwater trips, you don't want your ad showing up for "freshwater fishing" or "fishing gear." Every irrelevant click costs you real money. Negative keywords stop that from happening.
3. Send Traffic to a Dedicated Landing Page
Don't send someone who clicked your ad to your homepage. They clicked because they want to book a fishing trip. Send them to a page built around exactly that. Pricing, trip types, availability, and a clear way to book. The closer the page matches the ad, the more bookings you get.
4. Use Sitelinks
Sitelinks let you add extra links directly under your ad pointing to specific pages on your site. Things like your trip types, your rates page, or your booking page. They give a searcher multiple ways to get exactly where they want to go before they even land on your site. They make your ad take up significantly more space on the page, which pushes your competitors further down. More space, more clicks, more bookings.
5. Target Both Local and Out-of-State Searchers
Your customers don't all live nearby. Someone in Ohio planning a Gulf Coast trip is searching for you right now from their couch. A good Google Ads setup targets your local area and the cities and states your best customers actually travel from. Cover both and you open up a much bigger pool of potential bookings.
Here's What Happened for One Charter Owner
"I feel like I have a business again."
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Captain Mike S. was running almost entirely on word of mouth and repeat customers. After getting Google Ads running he started booking trips he never would have gotten otherwise.
The Don'ts
These are the mistakes that burn through budget fast and leave charter owners convinced Google Ads doesn't work. Most of them are easy to avoid once you know what to look for.
1. Don't Use Broad Match Keywords Without Controls
Broad match sounds good in theory. More reach, more clicks. The problem is Google decides what searches trigger your ad, and it gets creative. You end up paying for clicks that have nothing to do with booking a charter. Always use phrase match or exact match keywords, and layer in negative keywords to keep things tight.
2. Don't Skip Conversion Tracking
Without conversion tracking set up, you have no idea what's actually working. You're just spending money and hoping. Set it up and you'll know exactly which keywords and ads are turning into calls and bookings so you can put more budget behind what works and cut what doesn't.
3. Don't Mismatch Your Ad and Your Landing Page
If your ad says "Offshore Fishing Trips" but your page talks about everything your charter does, people leave. They wanted offshore trips and they landed somewhere confusing. Google also penalizes this with a lower Quality Score, which means you pay more per click and show up lower in results. The ad and the page have to match.
4. Don't Get Your Location Targeting Wrong
This one quietly kills a lot of charter ad budgets. Target too small an area and you miss out-of-state visitors who are often your best customers. Target too broadly and you burn through budget on people who will never make the trip. The right setup targets your local area plus the specific cities and states your bookings actually come from. Get this wrong and you're paying for clicks that will never turn into a reservation.
5. Don't Let Google Run Your Campaign on Autopilot
Google will push you toward Smart Campaigns, auto-applied recommendations, and broad match defaults. All of it sounds helpful. Most of it is designed to spend your budget faster, not smarter. You need someone watching the account, catching wasted spend, and making adjustments based on what the data is actually showing.
